BIS registration is a safety registration run by the Bureau of Indian Standards. Under its Compulsory Registration Scheme, makers must have certain electronics and IT products tested against the relevant Indian standard before those products can be sold in India. Covered products include mobile phones, laptops, monitors, power banks, adapters and LED lighting.
How it works
The maker sends the product to a recognised laboratory. If it passes the test for the matching standard, the Bureau issues a registration number to that maker for that product. The number is then printed on the product or its packaging, together with the Standard Mark logo of the Bureau.
What it covers
- Electrical safety, such as protection from shock, overheating and fire.
- Conformity to the Indian standard that applies to that product category.
- Suitability for the Indian mains supply of 230 volts and 50 hertz, for products that plug in.
What it does not promise
Registration is about safety and conformity. It says nothing about speed, picture quality, battery life, durability or value. A printed number can be copied, so the Bureau's own record is what confirms a registration. Everyday goods such as helmets and pressure cookers use a different mark, the ISI mark, which has its own entry.
