Quick Summary
The Redmi 17C 5G is Xiaomi's big-screen, big-battery budget 5G phone. It pairs a 6.9-inch display that runs up to 120 Hz with a 6,000 mAh battery, 33 W charging, a side fingerprint reader, IP64 protection and a microSD slot, all in a slim, leather-textured body. It is a practical all-rounder for people who live on video, social apps and long days away from a charger. The weak spots are an HD+ screen resolution and a camera that is solid rather than special. The 4 GB + 128 GB version costs ₹20,999 and the 6 GB + 128 GB version ₹22,999, which is not cheap for the segment.
Design & Build Quality
Redmi has given the 17C 5G a more grown-up look than most budget phones. The Coffee Brew version has a vegan leather texture that feels grippy and warm, and the quad-curved edges make a very large phone easier to hold. At about 8 mm thick it is slimmer than most big-battery phones, and at 211 g it is heavy but not unreasonable for a 6.9-inch device. You will still need a stretch for one-handed use.
Durability is better than you would expect at this price. The IP64 rating means protection against dust and splashes, so a monsoon walk or a wet kitchen counter is fine, though it is not meant for swimming. A protective case comes in the box. The 3.5 mm headphone jack and an FM radio, which needs wired earphones as an antenna, are small touches that many buyers still appreciate, and the side-mounted fingerprint reader is fast and sits where your thumb naturally rests.
Display
The 6.9-inch screen is one of the largest in this class, and for streaming, reading webpages and scrolling social media the size is a real pleasure. A refresh rate of up to 120 Hz makes animations smooth, and brightness is good enough for outdoor use. Eye-comfort features such as DC dimming and the TÜV Rheinland low-blue-light, flicker-free and circadian-friendly certifications are useful for people who spend hours on their phones at night.
The weakness is sharpness. The resolution is 1600 by 720 pixels, spread over a very large panel, so text is a little soft when you look closely, and colour coverage is modest. It is fine for casual use and video, but anyone who reads small text or compares screens will see the difference against Full HD+ rivals. Wet Touch Technology helps the screen respond when your fingers are damp, a nice touch for Indian monsoons.
Everyday Performance
The Dimensity 6300 is a capable entry-level 5G chip. In daily life it handles calls, WhatsApp, UPI payments, YouTube and browsing without drama, and the 6 GB version, with its memory extension feature, keeps more apps in the background. Heavy games at high settings are beyond its comfort zone, and the 4 GB version can feel tight if you keep many apps open. Fast UFS 2.2 storage helps apps open quickly, and the microSD slot, which accepts cards up to 1 TB, is a genuine advantage over phones that lock you into the built-in storage.
Camera
The 50 MP main camera is the hero. In good light it takes clear, detailed photos with natural colour, and portrait mode and the Ultra HD mode give you more control. Night shots depend on the scene and will lose detail compared with pricier phones, which is normal at this level. The 8 MP front camera is fine for video calls and casual selfies. Video recording stops at 1080p at 30 fps, so this is not the phone for ambitious video work, but for family photos and social posts it does the job.
Battery Life & Charging
A 6,000 mAh battery gives the Redmi 17C 5G easy all-day stamina, and a day and a half of mixed use is realistic with an HD+ screen. Xiaomi also says the battery keeps at least 80% of its capacity after 1,000 full charge cycles, which is a company claim but points to a focus on long-term health. Charging at up to 33 W is not class-leading, but a 33 W charger is in the box, which is not guaranteed at this price, and it is a clear step up from the 15 W many big-battery phones are limited to. Reverse charging at 10 W is useful in an emergency.
Software & Connectivity
The phone runs HyperOS 3 on Android 16. Xiaomi promises two years of OS updates and four years of security updates, which is a reasonable commitment for a budget phone. Google Gemini is built in, along with AI Erase and AI Sky editing tools, and Xiaomi's cross-device features such as Call Sync and Shared Clipboard help if you own other Xiaomi products. Expect some pre-installed apps that you may want to remove. The phone supports 5G on the main Indian bands, Bluetooth 5.4 and dual SIM alongside the microSD slot.
Features Assessment
The mix of features is the phone's real strength. A side fingerprint reader, a microSD slot, a headphone jack, IP64 protection and 33 W charging with a charger in the box add up to a more complete package than most phones in the price band. None of them is class-leading, but together they cover almost everything a daily user needs. The main missing pieces are a sharper screen and a more flexible camera setup.
Ease of Use
HyperOS is easy to set up and use, and the big screen helps older users and people with weaker eyesight. The size is the only concern: reaching the top of the screen with one hand is not easy, and pockets will feel the weight.
Value for Money
On the Xiaomi India store the 4 GB + 128 GB version is priced at ₹20,999 and the 6 GB + 128 GB version at ₹22,999. For a phone with an HD+ screen and a basic camera setup, that is on the high side, and cheaper 5G phones with similar chips are available. What you are paying extra for is the battery, the microSD slot, the longer software support and the solid build. If you will use those, the 6 GB model is the better pick because the 4 GB version leaves little room for multitasking, and the extra ₹2,000 buys noticeably smoother day-to-day use.
Who Should Buy It?
Students, commuters and families who want one large-screen phone for videos, calls and social apps, and who value battery life and a microSD slot. It also suits anyone who wants a phone that will keep receiving updates for several years.
Who Should Consider Alternatives?
Buyers who want a sharper screen, a second rear camera or fast 5G gaming should look at slightly costlier phones with Full HD+ displays. Anyone with small hands or who prefers a compact phone will find the 6.9-inch body too large.

Editorial Verdict
The Redmi 17C 5G is a well-rounded phone that gets the everyday basics right. The screen is large and smooth, the battery lasts a full day and more, and the 33 W charger in the box means you are not left waiting overnight for a top-up. Small extras such as the side fingerprint reader, the microSD slot, the headphone jack and IP64 protection make it a more complete package than most phones in its class, and the promise of four years of security updates adds peace of mind. The weak points are easy to see. The HD+ resolution is soft on such a big panel, the camera is good but not versatile, the phone is large and heavy for one-handed use, and the 4 GB model is tight on memory. It also costs more than many competing 5G phones. We would recommend it to buyers who value battery life, storage flexibility and long software support more than a sharp screen, and we advise choosing the 6 GB version for smoother long-term use.
