Quick Summary
The TUF Gaming VG249Q5R is a 23.8-inch Full HD gaming monitor from ASUS with a Fast IPS panel that runs at up to 200 Hz. It is built for people who care more about speed and clean motion than screen size or resolution. The panel is quick, the colours are accurate on paper, and the price, at around ₹10,900 on the main Flipkart listing, is hard to ignore. The stand is basic and only tilts, and the screen is not bright enough to make HDR10 more than a tick on the box.
Design & Build Quality
The VG249Q5R follows the TUF Gaming look: angular lines, a dark finish and a simple, flat stand. The matte anti-glare surface keeps reflections down in a lit room. At 3.7 kg with the stand it sits steadily on a desk, and without the stand it drops to 2.7 kg, so wall or arm mounting is easy through the 75 × 75 mm VESA holes.
The stand is where ASUS has saved money. It only tilts, so you cannot adjust the height, and you may need a riser or books if your desk and chair do not match. The monitor also uses an external power adapter, a small point that matters if desk space behind the screen is tight.
Display Quality
The Fast IPS panel gives the wide, consistent viewing angles that IPS is known for, with a stated 100 per cent sRGB coverage that suits both games and everyday colour work. For a monitor at this price that is a pleasant surprise, and it makes web pages, photos and films look natural instead of washed out.
Where it is average is contrast and brightness. A 1,000:1 contrast ratio is normal for IPS, so blacks look more dark grey than deep black in a dim room, and 300 nits is fine for a normal room but not for a very bright one. HDR10 is supported, but with this brightness do not expect a real HDR effect. Full HD on a 23.8-inch screen is sharp enough for gaming and daily work, though text is not as fine as on a QHD monitor.
Gaming Performance
This is where the VG249Q5R stands out. A 200 Hz refresh rate is well above the 144 Hz and 165 Hz of most budget monitors, and ASUS rates response at 1 ms grey-to-grey, going down to 0.3 ms at best. Together with its Extreme Low Motion Blur mode, adaptive sync and the VESA AdaptiveSync Display 200Hz certification, fast shooters and racing games feel crisp and responsive. You will only see the gain if your PC can actually push around 200 frames per second, which suits esports titles on a modest graphics card very well.
Both the DisplayPort 1.4 and the two HDMI 2.0 inputs support the full refresh rate range, so you are not forced to use one cable. Shadow Boost, GamePlus and GameVisual are built in for competitive players, along with a flicker-free, low-blue-light screen for long sessions.
Connectivity & Audio
You get one DisplayPort 1.4, two HDMI 2.0 ports and a headphone jack. There is no USB-C and no USB hub, so a laptop needs a normal video cable. ASUS packs in a DisplayPort cable, but not an HDMI cable, so buy one if you plan to use HDMI.
The two 2 W speakers are a convenience, not a feature to rely on. They are fine for system sounds and quick videos, but they sound thin, so most gamers will use headphones.
Features Assessment
The software side is more useful than usual at this price. DisplayWidget Center software is there to manage monitor settings from your PC, and ASUS adds an AI Visual picture assistant. Shadow Boost and GameVisual presets are the gaming tools you will use most often. There is no USB hub, no built-in KVM and no height-adjustable stand, which is what you expect from an entry-level monitor.
Ease of Use
Setup is simple: attach the stand, plug in the power adapter and the DisplayPort cable, and the monitor works. The DisplayWidget Center software is included for managing the monitor's settings from your PC.
Value for Money
At around ₹10,900 on the main Flipkart listing at the time of writing, the VG249Q5R costs about the same as slower 144 Hz and 165 Hz monitors. For that money you get 200 Hz, a quick IPS panel with strong sRGB coverage, a three-year warranty on the listing and both HDMI 2.0 and DisplayPort 1.4. It is one of the best-value ways to buy a fast gaming monitor, as long as you are happy with Full HD and a tilt-only stand.
Who Should Buy It?
Competitive gamers on a budget, students with a gaming PC, and anyone who wants a very fast, colour-accurate Full HD screen for games and general use will find it a good fit. It is also a sensible upgrade for someone moving from a 60 Hz office monitor.
Who Should Consider Alternatives?
If you want sharper text, a bigger screen or true HDR, look at a QHD or higher-brightness monitor. If you need a height-adjustable stand, USB-C charging for a laptop or a built-in USB hub, you will need to spend more, or add an arm and a dock.
Pros
- Very fast 200 Hz refresh rate, with 1 ms response
- Wide viewing angles, thanks to the Fast IPS panel
- Strong colour coverage, at a rated 100% sRGB

Cons
- Tilt-only stand, with no height adjustment

200 Hz and strong colour at a budget price
Editorial Verdict
The ASUS TUF Gaming VG249Q5R is a fast, sensible budget gaming monitor that puts speed first. Its 200 Hz Fast IPS panel, quick response and adaptive sync make competitive games feel sharp and fluid, and the wide viewing angles and strong sRGB coverage mean it also looks good for films, browsing and general work. Both HDMI 2.0 and DisplayPort 1.4 handle the full refresh rate, DisplayWidget software makes settings easy to change, and the flicker-free, low-blue-light screen helps in long sessions. The compromises are what you would expect from an entry-level model. The stand only tilts, brightness and contrast are ordinary, HDR10 is more of a label than a real benefit, and there is no USB-C or hub. The speakers are thin, and ASUS leaves out an HDMI cable. If you play fast shooters or racing games and want the quickest screen you can get without paying a premium, this is an easy monitor to recommend. If your priorities are text sharpness, HDR or an ergonomic stand, a higher-priced monitor will serve you better.
