Flight Ticket Cancellation and Refund Rules in India: What Passengers Should Know

Free 48-hour changes, faster refunds and no processing fee: here is how the airline ticket rules in India protect you.

You book a flight in a hurry during a sale, and an hour later you spot a better date, or a spelling mistake in your name. Many people assume the airline will charge a hefty fee to fix it. Since March 2026, airline ticket cancellation and refund rules in India give you a little more breathing room, and few passengers know about it.

What Is the 48-Hour Rule for Flight Tickets?

After you book, you get a 48-hour window. In this time you can cancel the ticket or change it without paying the airline’s usual cancellation or change charges. If the new flight costs more, you pay only the difference in fare.

There is a catch. The free window works only if your flight is far enough away. It applies when the journey is at least 7 days away for a domestic flight and at least 15 days away for an international one. Book a flight leaving next week and the 48-hour option may not be available to you.

Once the 48 hours are over, the airline’s normal charges apply as per the fare you bought.

How Fast Should You Get Your Money Back?

The rules also put a clock on refunds. How long you wait depends on how you paid:

  • Credit card: the airline should refund within 7 days.
  • Travel agent or online travel portal: the refund should be completed within 14 working days.

Airlines cannot add a separate fee just for processing your refund. If you booked through an agent or a travel app, the airline is still responsible for returning your money, because the agent works on its behalf. So “talk to the agent” is not a good enough reply.

Can You Fix a Spelling Mistake in Your Name for Free?

Yes, in many cases. If you spot a small error in the passenger’s name and tell the airline within 24 hours of booking, you should not be charged for the correction. This is meant for a simple fix, such as a wrong letter, for the same person. It does not allow you to hand the ticket to someone else. The protection is clearest for tickets bought directly from the airline’s own website.

What If There Is a Medical Emergency?

If you or a family member travelling on the same booking is hospitalised during the travel period, the airline may offer you a refund or a credit for future travel. In other medical situations, the airline can ask for a fitness-to-travel opinion from a specialist doctor before it refunds. Keep your hospital papers handy and share them with the airline in writing.

What You Can Do Right Now

  1. Check your ticket confirmation for the booking time. Your 48 hours start from there.
  2. Compare your travel date with the 7-day (domestic) or 15-day (international) limit before you plan to cancel.
  3. Read your booking carefully the moment it arrives. Check the name, date and route, and report any spelling error within 24 hours.
  4. Cancel through the same place you booked, and save the confirmation message or email.
  5. If the refund is late, write to the airline first, quote your booking reference and the date you cancelled, and keep a copy. If there is still no reply, you can file a complaint on the National Consumer Helpline.

Things to Keep in Mind

These rules protect you, but they do not make every ticket free to cancel. Cheap fares that you cancel after 48 hours can still carry heavy charges, and foreign airlines may follow rules from their home country. Before booking a festive-season trip, it helps to look at the fare conditions and decide whether a slightly flexible fare is worth it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I cancel my flight ticket for free after booking?

You can cancel or change a ticket without extra charges within 48 hours of booking, as long as the flight is at least 7 days away (domestic) or 15 days away (international). After that, the airline’s normal charges apply.

How long does an airline take to refund a cancelled ticket?

For credit card payments, the refund should come within 7 days. For tickets booked through a travel agent or an online portal, it should be completed within 14 working days.

Can an airline charge a fee for processing my refund?

No. Airlines cannot charge a separate processing fee for giving your refund. Normal cancellation charges, where they apply to your fare, are a different matter.

Who is responsible for my refund if I booked through a travel app?

The airline. Travel agents and portals act on its behalf, so the airline must make sure the refund reaches you within the time limit.

Can I correct a spelling mistake in my name without paying?

If you report a small error in the passenger’s name within 24 hours of booking, the airline should not charge for correcting it. It cannot be used to change the ticket to a different person.

What if I have to cancel because of a medical emergency?

If you or a family member on the same booking is hospitalised, the airline may offer a refund or a credit for later travel. Keep your medical documents ready to share.
